Hall and Stoyle medal to cap off good day at Elite meet
Written by Dave Palana

Berkeley Hall medaled in the hurdles and the long jump and Becky Stoyle earned one of her own on the track as the Titans girls track team prepared to make a run at their first indoor track championship on Sunday at the MSTCA Elite Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Hall, a spring track standout for the past two seasons, has shown little trouble adapting to the indoor environment in her first winter season. Her second-place long jump of 17’11.75” was better than her outdoor mark, and she finished the day by taking sixth place in the 55-meter hurdles.

“She is so consistent in general that, if the roof was on or off this place, it wouldn’t affect her,” head coach Greg Zopatti said of Hall. “She is jumping great. She just needs to continue working hard in the weight room, which she has been doing, because the stronger she gets the better she’ll get in the later rounds in the hurdles.”

Stoyle also won a medal on the day by running a 41.28 300 meters and taking fourth place. The Titan junior and senior captain Teresa Fatemi also jumped well at the meet for the Titans, taking eighth and 19th respectively.

Juniors Mary Scanlan and Michelle Coate also ran well. Scanlan took 10th in the 600 meters while Coate finished 15th in the 300.

Sophomore Chelsea Savage and senior captain Sarah Cavalear struggled in the 1,000-meter run, but Zopatti said he hoped the race was a wake-up call that they both deserve to be among the elite in the state.

“I don’t think they realize that they belong at this level yet,” he said. “Hopefully this made them realize that, but overall I was very happy. We thought some kids could have run faster than they did, but they are still progressing in the right direction. It was a good set up for the next two weeks.”

The Titans hope to send a message to Bishop Feehan in the Elite Relays this weekend as they get set to challenge the Shamrocks for the Division III state championship on Feb. 20. The Titans fell just short against Feehan last year, but lost some key pieces to that team including jumper and sprinter Amanda Claflin, currently at Wheaton College, and distance star Heather Connick, who switched to swimming. The addition of Hall to the team could negate the loss of Claflin, but Zopatti said the distance runners are going to have to step up for Pembroke to win their first indoor championship.

“We’re going to have to have a perfect day,” he said. “I think our long jumpers will do what they do. Scanlan is starting to come on, but we need to get it done in the relays. We have two excellent relays, but we really need our 4x800 to score. That’s really a new group of 800 runners, so we need Chelsea and Cavy to really need step up and realize we need them more than ever.”
