Having served his country as a veteran of the Marine Corps, spending time in Vietnam during 1969, David McPhillips is used to giving back. He expanded his role last October to veterans’ agent, responsible for helping those in the community who served our nation. The role allows him to interact with veterans on a daily basis, ensuring that they receive the benefits they are entitled to for their service. This Monday, McPhillips will be part of the town’s Memorial Day ceremonies at which Pembroke will pay tribute to all those who gave their life in defense of their country, including his son, Marine First Lt. Brian McPhillips, recipient of a Bronze Star for bravery in battle who died a hero on April 4, 2003 in Iraq.  

Young children offer a unique view into the magic of the holiday season. The joy they bring and the innocence they possess can lead to happiness for all of us during this special time of year. Hobomock second grade students Katie Galligan, 8, Jacqueline Rogers, 8, and Katelyn Tropeano, 7, take a few moments to share there perspectives on what makes Christmas special to them. 

Regardless of the role, Joel Sugarman has always had the community at the top of his mind. During his 12 years on the School Committee, eight of which he served as chairman and on the School Building Committee, he oversaw the renovations of all five schools and was a leader in the start of the autonomous school district. Even through his role as a senior loan officer at Rockland Trust, he has found continued ways to support groups such as the Pembroke Education Foundation and the athletic programs at PHS through the Taste of Pembroke.

Elected to the Board of Selectmen in May, Oak Street resident Lew Stone is new to the job but not new to public service. Stone has been a member of the Council on Aging board, Community Center Task Force and Advisory Committee, and currently is on the Affordable Housing Committee, Town Government Study Committee and 300th Committee along with being a selectman.

When his wife bought Hugh Crossen a router in 1975, little did either of them know where it would lead. Thirty-five years later, Crossen has carved nearly 500 wooden signs that still hang throughout the area. Many of them, like the one outside the Pembroke Police Boys Club, are familiar sights for anyone driving through town.

Pembroke Police Sgt. Charles “Chuck” Mulrain retired from the department on Sept. 26 after about 35 years of service. He started full time in 1975 and has worked as a patrolman and provisional sergeant and as a sergeant since 2003.

Russell “Mike” Jenness was recently promoted to lieutenant in the Pembroke Police Department, becoming Police Chief Michael Ohrenberger’s second in command. He talked recently about how he got into the field and how it has changed over the years.

Mike Flaherty has lived in Pembroke for about 15 years. As a single father of five, he took up painting on a whim nine years ago. Today, he works as a houseman at the Hilton Garden Inn and has a gallery show at the Pembroke Public Library through July 30.

Chief Assessor Maureen O’Connor has worked in the Pembroke assessor’s office for 24 years and recently announced her planned retirement on Aug. 31. She and her husband, Gene, have lived in town for more than 40 years.

Robert McCormack, Pembroke High School Class of 2009, is the director of Pembroke Media Broadcast’s (PMB) latest addition, “The Lame Show,” which will premiere sometime this month. McCormack, 17, will attend Columbia College in Chicago this fall to study television writing and production.

Eighteen-year-old Shaquana “Coco” McDonough will represent the United States on the Deaf Olympics Soccer Team in Tai Pei, China this fall.
