Selectmen briefly reconsidered the Grange Gang’s 25-year lease of the former grange building on School Street Monday night but ultimately agreed to sign it. A five-acre lot on Pelham Street was again the subject of board discussion Monday night, as one selectman who previously supported selling the land said he felt the town should place it into conservation instead.
The day after the first big winter storm blew through Pembroke, selectmen discussed a freeze of another sort — the town-wide hiring freeze that remains officially in place despite being “thawed” several times.
A week after selectmen admitted they had made a mistake in appointing Greg Hanley to the Housing Authority board — it was not their vote to make — housing commissioners brought forward a different candidate to fill the seat vacated by longtime member Joe Mulkern.
With trash bills going up by $30 in the new year, many residents are questioning Pembroke’s waste system, which seems to discourage people from recycling, even though it costs the town less.
Selectmen say they want definite word from the state that the rare eastern box turtle lives on Pelham Street before deciding whether to place a town-owned lot there into conservation.
A local woman who wants to see dogs banned from town cemeteries said she is willing to take the issue to Town Meeting voters if necessary.
Pembroke taxpayers will likely see their property tax rate go up to $12.89 come Jan. 1, over last year’s $11.65 figure.
Selectmen and Planning Board members appointed Valley Street resident Tom Irving to the Planning Board on Monday. A local teenager was recognized by selectmen Monday night for her “outstanding display of bravery” during a fire at the home where she was babysitting on Sept. 21.
It turns out taxpayers won’t have to make good on their promise of $800,000 to finish the Mattakeesett Street ball fields.
Selectmen on Monday agreed to donate a total of $4,000 from the town’s gift fund — $2,000 to deck the halls and $2,000 to stock the pantry.
A one-acre lot on Pelham Street could be a local family’s future home, but neighbors are concerned that any activity there could displace its current resident — an endangered turtle.
On Monday, selectmen approved three separate one-year contracts that included a 1.5 percent raise for town police officers, clerical staff and Department of Public Works employees. Selectman Don Anderson warned that an “economic storm” could be coming in the next few months and suggested the town hold off on all purchases until spring during Monday’s review of the special Town Meeting warrant. Two weeks after selectmen voted to replace retired Veterans’ Agent Bob McKenna, Selectman Don Anderson suggested the board see if someone would be willing to do the job for free. Skate park supporters might have gone home again Monday night without a location— or at least a spot they didn’t ask for — except for a second chance. The town is one step closer to awarding Habitat for Humanity a one-acre parcel of land on Pelham Street. Habitat is interested in building a single-family affordable home on the site. Pembroke will keep its veterans agent in town, selectmen agreed Monday. Watching the selectmen’s meeting from home, veterans’ office secretary Mary Whitman was relieved by what she heard — that Pembroke will keep its veterans’ agent in-house. |
